St Mary's Lighthouse by scotto St Mary's Lighthouse by scotto
St. Mary's Lighthouse is on the tiny St. Mary's Island, just north of Whitley Bay on the coast of North East England. The small rocky tidal island is linked to the mainland by a short concrete causeway which is submerged at periods of high tide. The lighthouse and adjacent keepers' cottages were built in 1898 by the John Miller company of Tynemouth, using 645 blocks of stone and 750,000 bricks. It was built on the site of a monastery where a small sanctuary light would have acted as a guide to passing ships. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1984.

Taken yesterday evening just after the tide washed over the causeway.

Both times I've visited it was rainy/gray weather, and the top of the lighthouse was wrapped in plastic - but it's still a beautiful place! I love it there. I love Whitley Bay as well. :)

I guess this is what is called "sweet light" - you got that right moment, where the warm light just washes over your image.

There's something magical about the word 'causeway' - always makes me think of Mont St Michel.

What a wonderful place this is - are visitor allowed inside?

Nice shot! I'm not exactly sure what in particular grabs me about this picture but I definitely like it. Maybe it's the composition - I do like the composition... :D

Beautiful! It's amazing how the sunset can cast its light in such a wonderful way. Great capture! Most people don't seem to point the camera away from the sunset too much. ^.^

Wasn't this lighthouse featured in an episode of Geordie Racer?

I love shots of the sea like this. So peaceful, yet powerful at the same time. :)

Lovely shot and great subject. Like the crossing waves/wake in the forground and sharp detail of the lighthouse, nice dramatic sky and well exposed. I do think the ocean is under exposed though and maybe the light house tower makes the composition to center weighted and loses some interest? what do you think?

Love the composition. That submerged road pulls the image above the norm for lighthouse shots. Color and detail are exceptional.
